I Gusti Agung Wijaya Utama
Founder & ArtistÂ
I Gusti Agung Wijaya Utama, known as Gung Ama, is a Balinese photographer and artist born in Batu Bulan, 18 July 1988. With over 20 years of practice, he began his career in photojournalism before a 2014 discovery of archival photographs of Balinese royalty from the 1930s shifted everything.
Â
That discovery became Gamaphoto 1930 project a black and white reconstruction of pre-colonial Bali, and later become the foundation of his signature style. In 2019 he encountered the Afghan Box Camera, a near extinct analog technology. By 2021 he had built one by hand.Â
Â
His work has since centered on reconstructing pre-colonial Bali through black and white photography, entirely without digital intervention. Through Gama Studio, he opens that world to anyone curious enough to step inside.
